Broward County : The Photography of Gene Hyde

Description

In 1915, the South Florida communities of Fort Lauderdale, Dania, Pompano, Hallandale, Deerfield, and Davie joined together to form a county. They named it Broward, in honor of the governor whose Everglades drainage program had brought them such prosperity. Today, Broward is Florida's second largest county, with 1.6 million people. Photographer Aaron Eugene Hyde came to Fort Lauderdale in 1933, at the age of 16, to begin a 40-year career, serving as one of the county's few professional photographers and the photographer for the Broward edition of the Miami Herald. Gene recorded fascinating people, places, and times pivotal in the county's development. His photos evoke nostalgia for the not-that-distant past, a way of life Broward County residents will never see again.

Raleigh: : North Carolina's Capital City on Postcards

Description

Raleigh: North Carolina's Capital City on Postcards contains more than two hundred postcard images, which together capture much of what life was like in the "City of Oaks" and its neighbors in Wake County during the first half of the twentieth century. The Raleigh area has experienced tremendous growth since World War II, and much of what is fondly remembered by old-timers has been lost to the demands of development and the rigors of time. Some of the well-known landmarks, businesses, and characters, however, were captured on film by enterprising postcard photographers who were unknowingly creating an invaluable archive of historical data which now gives us an insight into the way life was lived in North Carolina's capital during the "Golden Age of Postcards." This wonderful new book brings to life the history of this diverse and dynamic region through carefully selected postcards from that era, accompanied by informative and insightful captions as well as a helpful essay on the history and importance of postcards.

Gaston Bachelard,Eileen Rizo-Patron: Intuition of the Instant

Intuition of the Instant

Description

Appearing in English for the first time, Intuition of the Instant --Bachelard's first metaphysical meditation on time and its moral implications--was written in 1932 in the wake of Husserl's lectures on streaming time-consciousness, Heidegger's Being and Time , and Henri Bergson's philosophy of the elan vital. A culmination of Bachelard's earlier studies in scientific epistemology, this work builds the epistemic framework that would lead theorists of all stripes to advance knowledge by breaking with accepted modes of thought. Intuition of the Instant sows the seeds of Bachelard's future poetics, most notably in the essay "Poetic Instant and Metaphysical Instant" (1939)--included in this volume, along with an excerpt from Jean Lescure's lecture "Introduction to Bachelard's Poetics" (1966). Eileen Rizo-Patron's translation offers a key to Bachelard's subsequent works on science, time, and imagination, which remain epistemological touchstones.

Jean Baudrillard: The Perfect Crime

The Perfect Crime

Description

In his new book, perhaps the most cogent expression of his mature thought, Jean Baudrillard turns detective in order to investigate a crime which he hopes may yet be solved: the murder of reality. To solve the crime would be to unravel the social and technological processes by which reality has quite simply vanished under the deadly glare of media real time. But Baudrillard is not merely intending to lament the disappearance of the real, an occurrence he recently described as the most important event of modern history, nor even to meditate upon the paradoxes of reality and illusion, truth and its masks. "The Perfect Crime" is also the work of a great moraliste: a penetrating examination of vital aspects of the social, political and cultural life of the advanced democracies in the (very) late twentieth century. Where critics like McLuhan once exposed the alienating consequences of the medium, Baudrillard lays bare the depredatory effects of an oppressive transparency on our social lives, of a relentless positivity on our critical faculties, and of a withering high definition on our very sense of reality."

Flannery O'Connor: The Complete Stories

The Complete Stories

Description

The publication of this extraordinary volume firmly established Flannery O'Connor's monumental contribution to American fiction. There are thirty-one stories here in all, including twelve that do not appear in the only two story collections O'Connor put together in her short lifetime - Everything That Rises Must Converge and A Good Man Is Hard to Find. O'Connor published her first story, "The Geranium, " in 1946 while she was working on her master's degree at the University of Iowa. This Book, which is arranged chronologically, shows that her last story, "Judgement Day, " sent to her publisher shortly before her death, is a brilliantly rewritten and transfigured version of "The Geranium." Taken together, these reveal an amazing lively, imaginative, and penetrating talent that has given us some of the most powerful and disturbing fiction written this century. Also included is an introduction and memoir by O'Connor's long-time editor, Robert Giroux.

A sabotaged plane. Two dead deep-water divers. Winter, 1553. Pursued by the Inquisition, Hannah Green, a fourteen-year-old Jewish girl, is forced to flee with her father from their home in Spain. But Hannah is no ordinary refugee; she has the gift of Sight, the ability to foresee the future, priceless in the troubled times of the Tudor court. Hannah is adopted by the glamorous Robert Dudley, the charismatic son of King Edward s protector, who brings her to court as a holy fool for Queen Mary and, ultimately, Queen Elizabeth. Hired as a fool but working as a spy; promised in wedlock but in love with her master; endangered by the laws against heresy, treason, and witchcraft, Hannah must choose between the The Complete Stories download book safe life of a commoner and the dangerous intrigues of the royal family that are inextricably bound up with her own yearnings and desires.

The Handbook of Adult Clinical Psychology: An Evidence Based Practice Approach

Description

The second edition of the Handbook of Adult Clinical Psychology: An Evidence Based Practice Approach like its predecessor provides clinical psychologists in training with a comprehensive practice handbook to help build the skills necessary to complete a clinical placement in the field of adult mental health. While practical in orientation, the book is based solidly on empirical evidence.Building on the success of the previous edition this handbook has been extensively revised in a number of ways. Throughout the book, the text, references, and website addresses and have been updated to reflect important developments since the publication the first edition. Recent research findings on the epidemiology, aetiology, course, outcome, assessment and treatment of all psychological problems considered in this volume have been incorporated into the text. Account has been taken of changes in the diagnosis and classification of psychological problems reflected in the DSM-5. Chapters on ADHD in adults, emotion focused therapy, radically open dialectical behaviour therapy, and schema therapy have been added. The book is divided into 6 sections: Section 1 covers conceptual frameworks for practice (lifespan development; classification and epidemiology; CBT, psychodynamic, emotion focused, systemic and bio-medical models; and general assessment procedures) Section 2 deals with mood problems (depression, bipolar disorder, suicide risk, and anger management) Section 3 focuses on anxiety problems (social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and depersonalization disorder) Section 4 deals with psychological problems linked to physical health (health anxiety, somatization, chronic pain, adjustment to cancer, and eating disorders) Section 5 focuses on other significant psychological problems that come to the attention of clinical psychologist in adult mental health services (ADHD in adults, alcohol and other drug problems, psychosis, and psychological problems in older adults) Section 6 contains chapters on therapeutic approaches to psychological distress related to complex childhood trauma (dialectical behaviour therapy for borderline personality disorder, racially open dialectical behaviour for over-controlled presentations, and schema therapy). Each of the chapters on clinical problems explains how to assess and treat the condition in an evidence-based way with reference to case material. Interventions from cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, interpersonal/systemic and biomedical approaches are described, where there is evidence that they are effective for the problem in question. Skill building exercises and further reading for psychologists and patients are included at the end of each chapter. This book is one of a set of three volumes which cover the lion's share of the curriculum for clinical psychologists in training in the UK and Ireland. The other two volumes are the Handbook of Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology, Third Edition (by Alan Carr) and the Handbook of Intellectual Disability and Clinical Psychology Practice, Second Edition edited by Alan Carr, Christine Linehan, Gary O'Reilly, Patricia Noonan Walsh, & John McEvoy).

Features a preview of the next Charlotte Stone novel, "The Last Kiss Goodbye." Josephine soon realizes that life is now a matter of daily survival--and recognizes that Lizzie, as The Handbook of Adult Clinical Psychology: An Evidence Based Practice Approach download book one of the few remaining servants, is the one she must rely on to teach her all she needs to know. Josephine's mother, too, vows to rebuild White Oak...but a bitter hatred fuels her. James Dunn is regarded worldwide as one of today's foremost biblical scholars. Having written groundbreaking studies of the New Testament and a standard work on Paul's theology, Dunn here turns his pen to the rise of Christianity itself. "Jesus Remembered" is the first installment in what will be a monumental three-volume history of the first 120 years of the faith. Focusing on Jesus, this first volume has several distinct features. It garners the lessons to be learned from the "quest for the historical Jesus" and meets the hermeneutical challenges to a historical and theological assessment of the Jesus tradition. It provides a fresh perspective both on the impact made by Jesus and on the traditions about Jesus as oral tradition -- hence the title "Jesus Remembered." And it offers a fresh analysis of the details of that tradition, emphasizing its characteristic (rather than dissimilar) features. Noteworthy too are Dunn's treatments of the source question (particularly Q and the noncanonical Gospels) and of Jesus the Jew in his Galilean context. In his detailed analysis of the Baptist tradition, the kingdom motif, the call to and character of discipleship, what Jesus' audiences thought of him, what he thought of himself, why he was crucified, and how and why belief in Jesus' resurrection began, Dunn engages wholeheartedly in the contemporary debate, providing many important insights and offering a thoroughly convincing account of how Jesus was remembered from the first, and why. Written with peerless scholarly acumen yet accessible to a wide range of readers, Dunn's "Jesus Remembered," together with its successor volumes, will be a "sine qua non" for all students of Christianity's beginnings.
